When Vernon Grant moved to Rock Hill in 1947 from New York he brought many progressive ideas to this community and region. He accepted the position as manager of Rock Hill’s Chamber of Commerce. His experience in the commercial art arena served him well in his duties as chamber manager. He often approached projects as he would an illustration on his easel. He would analyze the project, accept the challenge and then put his ideas in shape as he would a picture. Once completed the project concept, he would unveil the idea to the right person, much like he “showed off” his concepts to marketing and art directors across the country.
Joe Landford, a former manager for the City of Rock Hill said, “He was one of the first people in city government here who came from some place outside of this area so he had a perspective and optimism that really served him well and was much needed.” On issues from desegregation to public housing, Vernon Grant left an indelible mark on Rock Hill and the region.
Grant helped to lay the ground work for York Technical College. Further accomplishments included obtaining Federal funding for city projects and spearheading downtown urban renewal.
